1828 Massachusetts Militia Discharge Capt Peter Nutting Signed W H Sumner
Original Massachusetts militia officer’s discharge, issued at Headquarters, Boston, April 15, 1828, and signed in ink by Adjutant General William Hyslop Sumner.
The partly printed document records the accepted resignation of Peter Nutting, captain of a company in the Second Regiment of Infantry, Second Brigade, Third Division of the Massachusetts Militia. It states that Nutting is “honorably discharged, at his own request.”
Featuring a decorative Massachusetts coat of arms, bold “Commonwealth of Massachusetts” heading, handwritten entries, and Sumner’s large signature beneath “By His Excellency’s Command.”
William Hyslop Sumner (1780–1861) was a Massachusetts attorney, legislator, and adjutant general. This document bears his signature, not the governor’s.
Condition: Significant fold wear and splitting. The left panel appears separated along the vertical fold; additional splits and small losses occur along other folds, including near the signature. Age toning, scattered spotting, and edge discoloration. Text and signature remain legible. Please examine the photograph carefully.
An appealing early nineteenth-century Massachusetts military document with interest for collectors of militia history, autographs, and Nutting family genealogy.
