1861 Confederate Capt J B S Alexander Signed Letter Monterey VA West Point
1861 Confederate Capt J B S Alexander Signed Letter Monterey VA West Point
Original Civil War manuscript letter signed by Captain James Barton Stone Alexander, dated Monterey, Virginia, July 20, 1861.
Writing to Lieutenant Garnett Andrews, Alexander requests sixty days’ leave because of ill health. He states that he is forwarding a surgeon’s certificate establishing that he is unfit for duty. His signature is followed by his rank and designation: “Capt of Infantry / Prov Army of Va.”
Alexander was an 1856 West Point graduate and former officer in the 9th United States Infantry, with frontier service at Fort Simcoe and Fort Dalles. He resigned from the U.S. Army in May 1861 and entered Virginia service. He died at Charlottesville on August 15, 1861, only 26 days after writing this letter.
Research has located a separately published surgeon’s certificate concerning Alexander, dated at Monterey on the same day and recommending sixty days’ leave. That certificate is not included with this offering.
One sheet, with the letter on one side and the contemporary docket “Application for leave / Capt Alexander” on the reverse.
Condition: Age toning, intersecting folds, localized discoloration and wear along folds, and small edge splits or nicks. Writing and signature remain clearly readable. Please examine both photographs for condition.
An evocative early Civil War document connecting a young West Point graduate’s final weeks with military medical administration in Virginia.
